According to the World Energy Council, the notion of sustainable energy translates into three main elements: energy security, energy equity and a sustainable environment. By harmonizing these three elements (Energy Trilemma), the basis for prosperity and competitiveness in each country is laid.

The report presented by the World Energy Council aims to advance dialog on the following issues:

  • Providing insights across all evolving electricity sectors to identify areas of convergence, divergence and provide practical lessons for policy makers.
  • Understanding of the energy sector both globally and regionally at different stages of infrastructure development.
  • Analysis of the issues from the perspective of energy performance management at national level taking into account the three premises for sustainable development of the energy sector.

Today, the energy industry is undergoing a major transformation, with new trends calling for decarbonization, digitalization and decentralization of the sector.

The index is a way of quantifying the Energy Trilemma, and each country has been given a specific score. According to the report, no less than 125 countries are ranked in terms of their ability to provide a secure, affordable and sustainable energy system and we note that Romania ranks 25th in this ranking.
