Is the planet still making the energy transition?

In the ten years since representatives from 196 countries signed the Paris Agreement, only six countries have reduced their emissions in line with their pledges, while the United States has pulled out of the agreement. Despite the slow pace of transition, the study ENERGY TRANSITION OUTLOOK 2025 DNV's (PERSPECTIVES ON THE ENERGY TRANSITION 2025) maintains its forecast of a changing energy mix, with a decreasing share of fossil energy.

Among the main conclusions of the study are:

US policy changes will have only a marginal impact on the global energy transition.

Global energy security measures lead to a net reduction in emissions over time.

Electric vehicles and solar power are setting new benchmarks as electricity production grows and becomes greener, with less reliance on conventional resources.

The energy consumption of artificial intelligence may seem alarming, but it accounts for just 3% of global electricity by 2040. The report estimates it will remain below sectors such as electric vehicle charging and space cooling.

Emissions are not even halved by 2050 and urgent action is needed to reach the sub-2°C target.

The investment transition

Cap energy investments. While global energy spending has increased by 501TPTP7T since 2010, in line with global GDP, this correlation is now starting to break down. While less and less is spent each year on the fossil fuel-based energy system and more and more is spent on building and operating non-fossil-fuel capacity and grids, total energy spending is not growing significantly. The average annual energy expenditure around 2050 will be USD 6.5 trillion, not exceeding current levels, while GDP will almost double.

The rise and decline of fossil fuel investment.

The prospect of falling demand for fossil fuels - driven by the electrification of transportation and heating, as well as rising carbon costs - implies reduced investment in new fields, geographic concentration of production and lower operational expenditure from the early 2030s.

Variable and stable power generation.

Investments in solar (including storage) have increased from $110 billion in 2014 to $570 billion in 2024 and will reach $900 billion by 2044. Wind energy has seen a tripling of investment over the last decade to $180 billion and is expected to triple again by 2044. As these two sources begin to dominate electricity supply, substantial investment will be made in energy storage and system flexibility, including capacity that can generate power on demand. These include other renewable, nuclear and fossil fuel sources. Stable power generation will continue to attract investments of USD 350 billion annually by 2050.

Networking and storage.

Investments in energy storage, such as batteries and pumped storage hydropower plants, have increased 7-fold in the last decade, reaching $50 billion/year. In the future, more and more solar farms will be built with batteries included, attracting investments comparable to standalone solar panels in 2029. Combined storage investments will reach USD 150 billion/year in the 2030s and USD 300 billion/year in the 2050s.

The full study can be found here: dnv.com

În cei zece ani de când reprezentanții din 196 de țări au semnat Acordul de la Paris, doar șase țări și-au redus emisiile în conformitate cu angajamentele lor, în timp ce Statele Unite au ieșit din acord. În ciuda ritmului…

[33,30

0":"post-8854","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-articole","8":"category-noutati
["GET
