The Romanian oil and gas sector once again calls on the Parliament and the Government to ensure a transparent, stable and predictable regulatory framework, for the benefit of consumers, the state and investors alike.

”We support the affordability of natural gas for Romanian end consumers. This is possible by increasing competition on the retail market for household customers, as well as adapting the level of protection afforded to those vulnerable consumers. We further reiterate the need to encourage investment in the Romanian manufacturing sector. Once we succeed in improving Romania's interconnections with the EU gas market, the dependence on the quantities of natural gas transported through Ukraine will be considerably reduced. The continuation of works on the BRUA pipeline will fulfill this commitment and increase the interconnections between the Romanian and the European gas market. For final investment decisions to be taken on Black Sea natural gas, then predictability of the regulatory framework, market liberalization, interconnections and fiscal stability are needed. With the recent gas discoveries, Romania has an opportunity that few countries have: to ensure its energy independence and to have access to clean, versatile and sustainable energy sources”, says Franck Neel, President of the FPPG.

Since 1990, the Day of the Oilman is celebrated every year on September 8. At the initiative of the Federation of Free and Independent Petrom Trade Unions, the Day of the Oilman is held under the patronage of St. Mary, chosen as the patron saint of oilmen and dedicated to oil industry personnel, those working in drilling, extraction, processing and research of oil and natural gas.

Romanian oil, a page in history:

Romania has a 152-year oil history, a history of world firsts and extraordinary results. In 1857 Romania recorded three world firsts: the first country in the world to produce 275 tons of crude oil, followed by the USA in 1859, Italy in 1860, Canada in 1862 and Russia in 1863, Bucharest, the first city in the world to be illuminated with oil, and the Mehedințeanu brothers' refinery, the first refinery in the world, set up in the county of Prahova, in Ploiești. Also in Ploiești is the University of Oil and Gas, a higher education institution in the field of petroleum, established more than 70 years ago, and the National Petroleum Museum founded in 1959.

Romania was also the first country in the world to export gasoline (1900) and the first country to set up a school for surveyors (1904).

In 1937, Romania was ranked 7th in the world and continued to attract the world's attention with inventions and firsts that were to go down in the history of oil exploration. One of these great achievements belonged to the company ”Creditul Minier”: in 1934, at Chițorani, the depth of 3300 meters was reached, the second deepest in the world, after the absolute world record of 3458 meters recorded in California.

We should also mention the technical contributions made by Romanian inventors. The engineer Virgiliu Tacit invented the eruption preventer, and the engineer Ion Basgan patented in 1934 an extraction process that bears his name, used after 1944 not only in Romania but also in the USA.

As for the natural gas sector in Romania, it has a history of 110 years, the first natural gas emanations were discovered in Sărmășel, jud. Mures in 1909. The year 1910 marks the first intention in Europe to transport gas, finalized in 1914 with the first natural gas transmission pipeline in Europe, from Sărmășel to Turda over a distance of 55 km, and in 1915, the first company in Europe, Ungarische Erdgas Gesellschaft (UEG), was established with the exclusive object of activity: exploration, drilling, exploitation, transportation and distribution of natural gas in the Transylvanian basin.

Through their hard work and dedication, Romanian oilmen have managed to bring our country to the top of the world rankings and to keep it in direct competition with the world's great powers.

We thank the tens of thousands of dedicated people who are currently working so energetically day in day out in this strategically important national industry and celebrate with them the Day of the Oilman!
